Cancellation Policy

American Airlines has a very stringent policy on cancellations. They will only cancel a flight if an emergency cannot be resolved by other means. Similarly, like any other airline, American airlines have 24 hours cancellation policy for flight reservations. The airlines allow canceling primary economy flight tickets within 24 hours of reservations. But, American Airlines does not permit the introductory economy flight changes for flying to the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, and Central America. Further.

In addition to the fee, there are other reasons why you might need to cancel your flight. For example, you will also be charged if you miss your connecting flight due to weather delays. Also, if traveling with children under two years old, you must call the airline directly to make changes. If you do not cancel at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure date, you will be charged a $100 per passenger cancellation fee. This fee excludes travel agents, travel agencies, or tour operators. If you cancel less than 48 hours before your scheduled flight, you will receive a full refund minus any fees for changing your ticket. However, if you choose to rebook your flight, you will be responsible for paying the difference between the new and original fares.

Ways to cancel a flight

American Airlines offers several ways for passengers to cancel their flight reservations. Here are the ways to cancel a flight with American Airlines Airlines:

Online

If you booked your flight online, you could cancel it through the American Airlines website. Log in to your account, navigate to the "My Trips" section, and follow the instructions to cancel your flight. Remember that some tickets may be non-refundable or have cancellation fees, so read the terms and conditions carefully.

Phone

If you prefer to speak with a customer service representative, you can cancel your flight over the phone.

In-person

If you're already at the airport or prefer to cancel your flight in person, you can do so at any American Airlines ticket counter or self-service kiosk.

Cancellation Due to Weather

In the event of a flight cancellation due to weather, American Airlines will typically provide passengers with the following options:

Rebooking:

Passengers can be rebooked on the next available flight to their destination at no additional cost. The airline will try to accommodate passengers on the earliest available flight.

Refund:

Passengers who choose not to rebook can receive a full refund of their ticket price. The refund will be credited back to the original form of payment.

Refund policy

For the tickets which permit an appropriate refund for the corresponding cancellation, you can claim your refund via the official website, mobile app, or a third-party agency. During same-day changes, American airlines charge a $75 to $150 change fee for economy flights. Meanwhile, there is no changing fee on same-day for American business and first-class. And if you fail to change your flight, the airlines will charge a changing fee of $200 for domestic and $750 for international flights.

The airline's domestic flight cancellation fee is $200, and for international flights is up to $750 on different fare classes. After the cancellation fee, the remaining unused value of your airline flight tickets will be added to future trips under one year. If your flight tickets are refundable, you can change your flight without paying additional fees. However, additional charges will be if you want to upgrade your flight class. There is cancellation possible on refundable airline tickets before the scheduled flight departure. Meanwhile, the credit refund will return to your original credit card within seven days.

Steps to Cancel a Flight

Step 1. Visit the Airline's Website

Visit the American Airlines website and log in to your account.

Step 2. Go to My Trips

Once you have logged in, go to the "My Trips" section of the website. 

Step 3. Enter your booking reference number and last name.

Step 4. Select the Flight to Cancel

Select the flight that you want to cancel from your list of bookings. Then, check the flight details, such as the date, time, and route, to ensure you balance the correct flight.

Step 5. Cancel the Flight

Step 6. Confirm the Cancellation
