Cancellation Policy

American Airlines has a very stringent policy on cancellations. They will only cancel a flight if there is an emergency situation that cannot be resolved by other means.

Similarly, just like any other airlines, American airlines 24 hours cancellation policy over flight reservations. The airlines allow canceling basic economy flight tickets within 24 hours of reservations. But, American Airlines does not permit the basic economy flight changes for flying to the U.S, Canada, the Caribbean, and Central America. Further.

You cannot change your travel plans without paying a fee


In addition to the fee, there are other reasons why you might need to cancel your flight. For example, if you miss your connecting flight due to weather delays, you will also be charged. Also, if you are traveling with children under 2 years old, you must call the airline directly to make changes.

You will receive a full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of booking


If you do not cancel at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure date, you will be charged a $100 per passenger cancellation fee. This fee does not apply to travel agents, travel agencies, or tour operators.

You may get a partial refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure


If you cancel less than 48 hours before your scheduled flight, you will receive a full refund minus any fees associated with changing your ticket. However, if you choose to rebook your flight, you will be responsible for paying the difference between the new fare and the original fare.

Non-refundable ticket

During same-day changes, American airlines charge $75 to $150 change fee for economy flights. Meanwhile, there is no changing fee on same-day for American business and first-class. And if you failed to change your flight, the airlines will charge a changing fee of $200 domestic flights and a $750 for international flights.

The airlines domestic flight cancellation fee is $200 and for international flights is up to $750 on different fare class. the remaining unused value of your airlines flight tickets after the cancellation fee will be added into future trips under one year.

Refundable ticket

If your flight tickets are refundable, then you can change your flight without paying any additional fees. If you want to upgrade your flight class, then there will be additional charges. There is cancellation possible on airline refundable tickets before the scheduled flight departure. Meanwhile, the credit refund will be back to your original credit card within 7 days.
